The 568 participating teams have been whittled down to just six that are still in contention for top prizes, and their final rank order will be determined on April 28. Working in teams of 3 5, students estimated the implications of the region's long term drought for 14 straight hours on an early March weekend, creating assumptions and devising mathematical models to determine the hydrologic impact on Lake Powell, while taking into account the region's economic and political make up. "Students were asked to allocate waters of the mighty Colorado River to the Southwestern states and Mexico. This torrent of fresh water, averaging more than 1.3 million gallons every day, provides water for households, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. The challenge was to balance the varying flow of the river against demands for this precious natural resource, given a context of legal constraints and memories of the severe 2010 drought," explained Ben Fusaro of Florida State University, M3 Challenge consultant and co head judge. M3 Challenge contenders went to work, analyzing the impact of the 12 year deficit in Lake Powell, as danger of a declared water shortage looms in the Southwestern United States and 30 million Americanshose sustenance depends on the fast drying resource?continue to anxiously watch water levels. "Mathematics is a powerful tool for developing a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the real world," said Lee Seitelman, co head judge and consultant for the Challenge. "Solving such a problem requires students to first relate the problem statement to an appropriate mathematical model, then solve a mathematical problem, and finally translate the solution back to the real world problem from which it was derived, and present the results of that work in a manner that can be understood by the general public." After the students were done with their part, a slightly differentlbeit no less challenging?problem was presented to over 80 mathematicians around the country: who among these thousands of exemplary 11th and 12th graders should receive a share of $100,000 in prize money? Following rigorous evaluation in round one, or "triage judging," 120 of the almost 600 team solution papers advanced to the second round. This top 20 percent was scrutinized this past weekend in Philadelphia by a panel of 16 judges at the headquarters of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), organizer of the contest. By the end of the second day, after much reading and deliberation, the panel arrived at a unanimous consensus on the prize winning papers. The top six awards, ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, will go to teams representing the following high schools, listed here in alphabetical order: Eastside High School, Team 121, Gainesville, Florida High Technology High School, Team 137, Lincroft, New Jersey High Technology High School, Team 165, Lincroft, New Jersey Pine View School, Team 481, Osprey, Florida Ridgefield High School, Team 538, Ridgefield, Connecticut T. R. Robinson High School, Team 75, Tampa, Florida Judges will finally be able to put names and faces to the top papers when these six teams present their winning solutions at Moody's Corporation headquarters in Manhattan on April 28. On that day, the final rank order of the papers will be determined and scholarship prizes will be awarded by The Moody's Foundation, which funds the Challenge. Six additional teams, whose papers underwent in depth discussion by judges but narrowly missed making it into the top six, will be recognized with Finalist Team Prizes of $1,500 each: Academy For Allied Health Sciences, Team 144, Scotch Plains, New Jersey Belmont High School, Team 211, Belmont, Massachusetts Career Center High School, Team 530, Winston Salem, North Carolina Elk County Catholic High School, Team 204, Saint Marys, Pennsylvania Holmdel High School, Team 445, Holmdel, New Jersey Needham High School, Team 272, Needham, Massachusetts Teams representing the following 31 schools will be awarded Honorable Mention Team Prizes of $1,000 each for noteworthy solutions:.

Asexually reproduced plants and designs and utilities are the most common patents issued by the PTO. A utility patent covers a broad array of new inventions. According to law, a "process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof" may receive a patent if it meets the specified criteria. The term "process" refers to a "process, act or method," and typically includes an industrial or technical process. For example, Clarence Birdseye received a patent for a method of freezing food so it could be sold to consumers. A computer program is also considered a process, as is a business method, as long as it has specific, identifiable results. What can't receive a patent? Scientific formulas, laws of science and mathematical equations. Additionally, federal law prohibits patenting any type of atomic weaponry. Your ability to patent your idea depends on if you are able to describe how it is made, step by step. The PTO examines applications to ensure that the "specification" portion of your application is sufficient enough so that anyone who looks at your patent will know how to make and use your invention. Toys and games can be patented. They meet the criteria of "useful" in that they serve the purpose of entertainment or education. Even Netflix patented its method of renting DVDs to customers, calling it a "method and apparatus for renting items." To get an idea of how thorough a patent must be in describing how an invention is made or how a process is created, an inventor should examine an issued patent. If you're an inventor, you'll probably want to hire a patent agent or patent attorney to get your application through. Patent applications are not supplied via legal forms provided by the PTO; rather, they must be drafted in a prescribed format. Seek out agents and attorneys with a background in physical sciences who are skilled in the legal language the PTO requires in patent applications. Additionally, your patent agent or patent attorney will know if the "claims" your new invention makes rely on prior art, so that these can be drafted into the application accordingly. For example, if your invention relies on a battery, you cannot claim the battery as part of your discovery other than to state that your invention requires it to function. A patent agent or patent attorney knows how to word this so that your application will not be rejected by the PTO. The filing fee for a utility patent is $330, which excludes search and examination fees, as well as costs incurred if your initial application is rejected by the PTO and you file an appeal. Roughly 95 percent of initial patent applications are initially rejected because their claims are too close to those used in prior art; your patent agent or attorney must find a way to rewrite the claims to that they pass muster. Additionally, if you receive a utility patent, you must pay the PTO maintenance fees at the 3.5, 7.5 and 11.5 year intervals or else your patent will expire. If you're able to turn your idea into a tangible invention and get it patented through the PTO, your invention enjoys 20 years of protection against infringement (14 years, if you receive a design patent). Consider trade name pharmaceutical drugs that have patent protection of 20 years, during which time no other drug just like them can be introduced to the market. You, too, can corner the consumer market if your invention proves to be a desirable consumer commodity. Tips for moving houseplants from outdoors to indoorsMany gardeners keep their houseplants outside during the summer and move them inside for the winter. Typically this is a good strategy but with moving plants in during the winter the plants. Air Jordan 14 Black Toe 2014,OTTAWA Anybody have a dollar? That's the going price for the world renowned Experimental Lakes Area research facility. The price was noted by Manitoba Conservative MP Joyce Bateman in a June 2 letter to a constituent in which she reiterates her government's plan to transfer ownership of ELA to a university or private business. "This facility will be very attractive to them, especially given recent investments, and the federal government is committed to offering a transfer of ownership for a nominal fee of $1," Bateman wrote. The price tag of $1 will net the buyer 40,000 square feet of research and living space in 19 buildings. Ottawa has invested $3.5 million in the buildings in the last 10 years, including $850,000 for three new labs as part of the Economic Action Plan in 2009. NDP MP Pat Martin said it's fiscally reckless for the government to be selling such a valuable asset for a pittance. "They just dumped millions into it and they're willing to hand it over for a buck?" he questioned. The lakes on which research is conducted are owned by the Ontario government. Last month, ELA scientists were told the government is getting out of the project and cancelling its $2 million annual budget in 2013 because ELA no longer is aligned with its priorities. "The freshwater research being conducted at a variety of other facilities across the country will meet the research needs of the department." said Erin Filliter, director of communications for Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield. In her letter, Bateman said there is still federal funding available for ecosystem research, including "similar ongoing lakes research being done under the auspices of Environment Canada in the lakes of Saskatchewan." Six former ELA scientists wrote to Bateman saying they were astonished by her letter. "We find much of the information that you have included to be factually incorrect, incomplete and misleading to your constituents," they wrote, on June 11. They took issue with her saying the research done at ELA no longer aligns with the department's priorities of fish populations, climate change and ecosystem management. "The ELA is carrying out research specifically addressing the objectives and goals of DFO that you have listed in your letter," they wrote. They attacked her suggestion the number of projects being conducted is down but costs are up, saying the number of projects has not declined and the operating costs are the same as they were in 1990, "without adjusting for inflation!" Raymond Hesslein, who worked as a senior scientist at ELA for 30 years, said while there is research being done on lakes in Saskatchewan "to compare it to the work going on at ELA is a crazy comparison." Scientists from around the globe have lobbied the Conservatives to reverse the decision on ELA, noting the facility is the only one in the world doing entire ecosystem research on freshwater lakes. Its work has led to global policy changes on issues such as acid rain, hydroelectric dams and mercury. Bateman did not respond to a request for an interview. Hesslein said he doesn't know the government's motivation for selling the ELA, but said at the very least the government should give ELA more than nine months to try to find new funding partners. Filliter said the government is working "diligently" to transfer the facility to a third party. However, sources close to the ELA say none of the stakeholders has been contacted, including the universities that do research at the facility and Friends of ELA, a non profit group that raises money to support ELA research.

Store Online Air Jordan 14 Black Toe 2014,Motorboat Jones 9s Winter running is not my favorite thing. Here is why. My body does not like the cold. A few years ago I experienced a very nasty viral infection that turned in to a full blown cough that lasted for a month. I thought I had exercise induced asthma. I went through the full gamut of tests but the results were inconclusive. One thing became apparent; every time I catch a respiratory virus, breathing in cold air only exacerbates the problem. A few times it has even landed me in the hospital with serious breathing problems. As a result, I am cautious about running outside in the winter. Running in the cold is very taxing. Running one mile is like three. Your lungs have to work harder. Sometimes it can even leave you feeling short of breath. Now that I am training for the BMO Vancouver Marathon, I have been running outside. But I am careful to not overtax my system or run too fast. I have also noticed running in the cold seems to lead to pain and stiffness in the knees and joints. Apparently, a person's blood flows slower in the cold, making it harder to move our muscles. Studies have also shown cold weather can lead to a worsening in arthritic symptoms. In addition, a moist and rainy climate such as Vancouver can cause joints to swell. This swelling can lead to greater joint stiffness. A 2007 study at Tufts University actually revealed that every 10 degree drop in temperature corresponded with an incremental increase in arthritis pain. Increasing barometric pressure was also a pain trigger in the Tufts study. Other studies in medical cadavers have shown that barometric pressure affects the pressure inside our joints. So if you are finding it difficult to run through these cold winter days, you are not alone. Here are some tips to help get us through it together. Layer up. Always wear a hat and gloves and moisture wicked layers. We lose most of our body heat through our head, hands and feet. If you find inhaling cold air is irritating your airways, wear a scarf or balaclava. Another trick: Double up on your socks. I love wearing wool running socks because they tend to be warmer and keep my feet drier than cotton. Try a wool running sock such as Thorlos or SmartWool. Don overdress. Too many layers and you may get over heated, even running in the cold. I usually wear a base layer and top it off with a fleece lined running shirt. Some fabrics used in running clothes also seem to capture and hold the sweat more. My personal favorite is anything Dri Fit by Nike. Breathe through your nose. I struggle with this myself. Breathing through your mouth usually leads to a mucous build up in your throat, which can lead to difficulty breathing. Start off your run slow. It typically takes me five kilometres to warm up my body and muscles before I can pick up the speed. Allow your body to warm up first by easing into your run at a slower pace for the first few kilometres. Once your muscles are warmed up, feel free to pick up the pace. Drink warm water. Just because it is winter doesn mean you should not be drinking on your runs. Without water, you can run the risk of dehydration. Instead of filling up your water bottle with cold water, opt for warm or room temperature water. Add lemon and some honey. Stretch. Make sure to limber up your joints and muscles by stretching after each run. Stretching cold, tight muscles pre run can lead to muscles strains, tears or injuries. Warm up first. Run. Stretch after. Better yet, take a yoga class to stretch tired muscles. You will also increase your range of flexibility. The addition of yoga to any fitness regime has been well documented and is chalked full of positive benefits. Yoga also teaches us how to breathe properly. Take glucosamine. Glucosamine and chondroitin are part of natural cartilage which acts as a cushion between the bones in the joint. Glucosamine is a natural substance found in the covering of shellfish according to WebMD. It is usually taken as a supplement in powder, tablet, capsule or liquid form to aid in joint deterioration in osteoarthritis. Analysis has not shown either glucosamine or chondroitin to slow joint destruction or ease pain. However, some people believe it does. I take glucosamine and have heard from other endurance athletes that is seems to strengthen their joints and ease joint stiffness. If you have an allergy to seafood don take it. Pack a change of clothes. As soon as you stop running, your body begins to cool down immediately. You can get cold really quickly by staying in your sweat soaked running clothes and even risk catching hypothermia. Change immediately into dry clothes after your run. If you are going on a destination run, pack a change of dry clothes with you. Heating pads and hot baths. When joint stiffness seems to flare up from a hard workout or cold weather run, I break out my heating pad or take a hot bath. Ice is always a first however when treating inflammation of the muscle. Wear sunglasses. On sunny days wear polarized sunglasses for the best protection. The glare of the sun off the snow can actually cause snow blindness. Run in to the wind. On windy days make sure you run into the wind at the start of your run after you have broken a sweat and finish with it at your back advises Runner Worldmagazine. Grab a coffee. The best part of any winter run is grabbing a coffee after you are finished. It will warm up your insides. Air Jordan 14 Black Toe 2014 Many of us are just good natured people who don think twice about doing for others when they need help. There is nothing wrong with being good natured and we should maintain our integrity but there are times that we just need to learn to say no. We can be too giving in our relationships with others. Now I realize that many of you are givers by nature and that is perfectly fine. Giving is what you live to do. I not saying that you should attempt to change from what God has created you to be but you can certainly find people to give to who will appreciate the things that you do for them. When you continue to give to and support a deadbeat you don help that person or yourself. When you cease to support a deadbeat that person will only proceed to the next victim and proceed to milk that person dry. I have learned not to feel bad when I don bend over backwards to help a person who is a dead beat. They won love you, they won appreciate it, and they will only use and abuse the thing that you could have given to a person who really does appreciate it. The person who appreciates your help will use it to the fullest advantage possible. The person who doesn appreciate it will squander it. Let me give you a personal example: When I was stationed in Korea in the 80 I used to get a pair of shoes made every month. When I left Korea I never really wore them much because they were nice dress shoes and I came to an area where shorts and sandals is the norm. There just weren many occasions to wear the dress shoes. These shoes were made of the finest materials and were fashionable so there was absolutely nothing wrong with them. I outgrew them and decided to give them away to someone who needed them. I gave nine pair of them to a young man after I had joined the church who didn seem to have much. They fitted him fine and he took them saying that he liked them. The problem was that in the months that followed I never saw him wear them. When I asked him again if he liked the shoes he said yes. When I asked him why he never wore the shoes he claimed that he didn have any other clothes to wear with them. I found another pair of shoes later which I decided could be a blessing to someone else so I gave them to another gentleman who had a large family and not much money. He would wear these shoes just about every Sunday. When I saw this I really wished that I could have gone back and got the other nine pair and given them to him also. I made the mistake of not qualifying the receiver of the gift before I gave them. The first person had no appreciation of what he had. We can make the same mistakes in life with our good deeds. Let not waste the small amount of good and precious gifts that we have. This incident reminds me of the bible verse which says: your pearls not unto swine. If we are going to be a blessing to others lets make our blessings count for something. Evaluate your gift before you give it, and evaluate the receiver. Make each decision that you make a wise one and don let anyone abuse the good that you will do for them. Ask questions which are pertinent to the situation. If they don know how to utilize resources they will only waste them which won do anyone a bit of good. Use your gifts to be a blessing but remember that the value can be multiplied if the blessing is applied in the right place at the right time. The Good Life
